This device measures the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of soil. This is an acceptable method used in classifying soil per Federal Regulation 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P and A. The Pocket Penetrometer was developed for use by field personnel in checking manual classification of soils. Data was compiled on several thousand UCS tests of silty clays and clay-like soils against the penetrometer readings to develop a scale. A close relationship exists between the penetrometer’s scale readings and soil type.
